Cheap Food!!!

Wow, I found a really great organization that makes it possible for you to get great food at a very reduced cost! I would have mentioned this sooner, but I wanted to receive my first order and check the quality of the food before I suggested others try it. They guarantee that nothing is "day old" or seconds. Basically here is how it all works. Companies (like Tyson, Perdue, Dole, etc) will have a surplus of food, by donating this food to an organization that distributes it through churches, the companies can write it off as a charitable donation. What does this mean for you? It means that you can purchase this food at a guaranteed saving of at least half off! I thought it all sounded too good to be true, so I tried it and it is awesome! You can order online and the basic "box" is $30, this means that you are guaranteed to be getting at least $60 worth of food. You can order as many of these boxes as you like or you can add specialty boxes to your order. You do not have to buy a basic box in order to get a specialty box. You place your order (I did online so that I could use a coupon code...I will post next months (Oct) on here as soon as it is released) by the deadline and then on the pick up day you just show up at your location with your receipt that you printed from your computer and they give you your food. Here are a few of the concerns that I had about this:
  • Is this for very low income people...am I taking food that would be going to homeless people?
  • Are the pick up lines super long meaning that I will have to stand in line for hours?
  • Is the food good quality/name brand?
  • Is the food freezer burned?
To put all your minds at ease, the website makes it very clear that this is for anyone, there are absolutely no income requirements at all! I wanted to make sure, so I called my nearest pick up location and was once again assured that this is for everyone! Upon arriving at my pick up location on the designated day at the designated time, I was surprised to see that there was no line. I handed the lady my receipt and proceeded down a row of people with boxes in front of them. As I slid my basket (they recommend bringing a box or laundry basket) down the long tables, the workers set in the food assembly line style. I was out of there within 10 mins of walking in. All the meats are vacuum sealed and frozen. I have already tried most of them and they are wonderful. I ended up spending $58 (2 signature boxes) and here is what I got:
  • 6 x 8 oz Ribeye Steaks
  • 2 lbs 80/20 Lean Ground Beef
  • About 4 lbs Split Chicken Breasts
  • 8lbs Chicken Thighs
  • 8 x 6 oz Pork Chops
  • 8 x 6 oz 100% White Meat Turkey Burgers
  • 24 oz Deli Sliced Ham
  • 2 lbs Frozen Sweet Potatoes (I was pleasantly surprised that these are cleaned, peeled, and cubed)
  • 2 lbs Frozen Green Beans
  • 30 oz Canned Pears
  • 24 oz Orange Juice Concentrate (which is two of the frozen concentrates you would buy at the store)
  • 6 lbs Fresh Onions
  • 6 lbs Fresh Potatoes
  • 2- 2% Shelf Stable Milk
  • 2 Dozen Eggs
  • 8 Edwards Single Cherry Pies
Once again, I could have also purchased specialty boxes like the "Grillers Box" which is loaded with various types of grill meats. I was happy with everything and plan on doing it again next month. You only do one pickup per month.
Down to business... the website is www.angelfoodministries.com I will be posting coupon codes that either give you a dollar amount off or a percentage off once they are released for the month. If you do end up purchasing because of reading this, please enter savingyoursenseandcents@yahoo.com as your referral email...it will ask you for this at check out. Either way it is a really good deal!
